The English /
Literacy taught here at AAESS follows the British National
Curriculum and the new literacy strategy.
English is
taught as a separate subject daily, but is continually
reinforced in other curriculum areas and subjects. The purpose
of our English curriculum is to develop pupils’ abilities to
communicate effectively with expression, confidence and fluency
in both speaking, reading and writing.
We use the Jolly
Phonic scheme in the Reception, Year 1 and 2 classes to support
the acquisition of our English skills. The programme offers the
children strategies to word build and segment. We encourage
children to make independent attempts at their work to allow these
skills to be used. Our aim is to give the children confidence
early on so that they are competent in basic skills and ready to
extend their vocabulary use and grammar acquisition as they move
through the school.
Our school
utilises a range of teaching approaches and resources in order to
make the English experience as rich as possible. Big writing, the
LRC ( Learning Resource Centre), displays, Book Week, class
assemblies, role play and productions all help create an
enjoyment for writing and a love for reading in our pupils.
Pupil's who speak
English as a second or third language and are identified as having
additional needs, are assisted by our English as an additional
language programme. This support is in class wherever possible.
