In the secondary school,
within the art department, we teach students at KS3 & KS4 up to
and including art IGCSE as well as ‘A’ level.
Projects at IGCSE level
and ‘A’ level are designed to meet the examination board
‘assessment objectives’. At KS3 (lower school) projects are
designed to meet National Curriculum requirements. At KS3
projects last approximately six or seven weeks. Favourite
projects include: “Mask Making” in year 7, “Mark-Making”
(including a look at Van Gogh and Seurat) in year 8 and
“insects” in year 9.
Fundamentally, at all
levels, the art department looks for observation, inventiveness
with materials, development of skill, understanding of art,
originality and the seeking out and finding of interesting form.
We believe that art involves finding as well as knowing,
thinking as well as doing, skill as well as imagination,
pleasure as well as struggle, hard work as well as satisfaction.
Apart from other
timetabled lessons, the art department it currently conducting 2
period 7 lessons in “Mask Making” and a period 7 lesson in art
appreciation/art history. There are plans also for the art
department to start painting murals and to run period seven
lessons in mural painting. We also intend to explore the
possibilities of art trips within the UAE and also further
afield. The art department recently participated in the charity
event at the Hilton hotel (with portraits being completed by Mr
Cottrell) and it is anticipated that we will take part in and
contribute to other events throughout the year. We hope to
establish the department as a very creative, effective,
efficient and well-organised aspect of the school. We look
forward to student and if possible parental participation in
this.
