Primary School

The Primary School

AAESS is a privately owned ‘not for profit’ school. It was set up by seven local and international companies in 1978. The rationale was to provide an appropriate standard of education of expatriate employers, to ensure they would not be socially or academically disadvantaged when they returned to their home countries.

The original model chosen was that of a British system school and that policy has continued to the present although also recognising that we can be flexible and draw on best practice from other education systems.
Children can be admitted to the Nursery classes at the age of 3 (by September 1st) and continue, in Secondary, to take A level examinations at age 18.

The school site is in distinct areas with a Foundation block housing Nursery and Reception classes, a Key Stage 1 block housing Year 1 and 2 children and a new KS2 annex for Year 3. Our Year 4, 5 and 6 children have their classrooms in our most recently completed building. In the main Primary Administration block, we have the Primary Library and the nurses’ rooms in addition to the Offices of the Head, Deputy and the Assistant to the Head of Primary. Our sister school – AAESS Secondary - is on the same site but in its own independent building which enables Primary and Secondary to work closely together.

We have several outdoor play areas. In order to make maximum use of our outdoor environment many are shaded and have misting systems. We have play equipment and quiet areas to allow children the choice of taking part in games with each other or to sit quietly and be with friends. Our much admired PE lessons take place indoors and outdoors and we excitedly await completion of our new purpose-built swimming pool and gymnasium. There is a well equipped ICT Lab in the KS1 block and Year 6 children have an opportunity to use the ICT facilities in the Secondary building as part of their Year 7 transition.
AAESS Primary School provides high quality education for children from 3 to 11 years.
Throughout the school we follow programmes of study as prescribed in the British National Curriculum. However, as is fitting in any international setting, there have been adaptations, both in terms of the content taught and the methodology in teaching it, to meet the specific needs of our pupil population. We also conform to local Ministry guidelines by offering our children sessions of Arabic and Islamic Studies each week. Pupils are encouraged to be inquisitive, to appreciate and tolerate the needs and differences of others, be active learners and, above all, to thoroughly enjoy their time at school.

Physical lay out

The Primary school is divided in to distinct areas catering for the different phases of children’s learning.

Our Nursery area consists of well equipped and self contained stimulating class rooms. The children have their own eating and play areas. Although very much part of the whole school, they are able to operate independently in a warm and nurturing environment. The Nursery children have their own outdoor working area and enclosed and covered play area.

Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 children share a building and have classes around a large central area which has timetabled use by all classes (including nursery) for creative role play. The children have their own large outside play areas giving many opportunities for physical and creative play. Areas are covered to give protection from the Al Ain sun.

The Key Stage 2 building is identical in design, but houses a large study area in the centre. This are is used for small group work, independent study and one to one activities. There is also a well equipped Primary ICT suite in this building. Outside, children have their own play area, separate from the younger children.

As an inclusive school, we are able to offer education to children that need English language support (EAL) and have been identified with individual learning needs (ILN). Our trained staff create learning programmes for all children. By supporting their learning in this way, we are able to able to educate children that might otherwise not have access to the school.

Our focus throughout the school is on creative learning that constantly builds on past successes. We want children to develop their own distinct talents in a structured and caring environment. They should be happy and feel a real part of the school community.
